Ancient Salona & Town of Trogir Time seems to have stood still in Solin, the ancient site of Roman Salona. At the time of its greatest prosperity during the 3rd and 4th centuries, Salona had a population of approximately 40,000 inhabitants when Split did not even exist. With your guide, discover the ancient world of Salona. Archeologists have excavated remains of temples, amphitheaters, early Christian churches, burial grounds and baths. Salona is one of the most important excavation sites from Roman times in Croatia. Afterwards, travel to the town of Trogir driving along the beautiful Riviera of the Seven Castles. Situated on a small island squeezed in between the mainland and the larger island of Ciovo, the tiny island is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Except for some green parks, stone houses, palaces, churches, monasteries, towers and old city walls, occupy the entire island. Trogir is a living museum. Visit the main attraction in Trogir, the 13th century Cathedral of St. Lawrence, which is considered one of the finest examples of sacral architecture in Croatia. The unusual construction with three naves and three semi circular apses dominates the whole town. The main portal carved by the local artist "Radovan" in the 13th century is world famous. Afterwards, view the exteriors of the Town Loggia, Town Hall and the Cipiko Palace before reboarding your coach for the return trip to the pier.

The Ruins of Herculaneum Another victim of the fiery temper of Mt. Vesuvius was the village of Herculaneum, which buried under mud and lava, lives on in its uniquely preserved atmosphere. Unlike the commercial city of Pompeii, Herculaneum was a seaside resort. Dating back to the 4th century BC, the city was thought to have been founded by the legendary Hercules. This elite Roman resort was devastated by the same volcanic eruption that buried Pompeii in 79 AD. Unlike the ash and lava that devastated Pompeii, Herculaneum was covered by a torrent of mud, which protected the ruins from atmospheric agents and illegal excavators. This natural preservation of wooden elements, foodstuffs, fabrics, and architecture provides a fascinating and intimate look into the Roman's private life in ancient times. The site was discovered by accident in the early 1700's when a well was being dug and workmen struck a stone pavement, the stage of the city's theater. Serious excavations began under Mussolini but only about eight blocks have been excavated. The rest is covered not only by rock but also by a dense modern neighborhood. Bringing more of Herculaneum to light is a slow operation, with new digs continuing. Time permitting; you'll stop at a cameo factory, where you will have the opportunity to observe local artisans at work in their centuries-old shell-carving tradition.
