Bing Ting (Michelle) Ren & Abraham Tom
Location: San Francisco, CA
Michelle and Abraham would like to first express their sincere appreciation to all of the family members, and friends, who have helped them to be where they are today; and of course to thank you for visiting their wedding website.
Michelle and Abraham have had so much fun and experienced so much thus far in their journey together. Michelle and Abraham met a year and half ago at a friend’s party, but they did not really meet until a month later over a plate of Korean BBQ; they have been inseparable since. Both of them love to travel and have shared many trips together. Michelle and Abraham are very excited to begin the next stage of their journey together.
Michelle and Abraham's wedding will be a traditional Chinese ceremony; primarily a tea ceremony during the day and a wedding banquet.
Traditionally, the bride and groom will serve tea (holding the teacups with both hands), inviting the respective elders to drink tea by addressing them by formal title, e.g. first uncle or third aunt. The people being served will sit in chairs, while the bride and groom kneel. The newlyweds serve tea in order, starting with the groom’s parents then proceeding from the oldest family members to the youngest, e.g. the groom’s parents, then his paternal grandparents, then his maternal grandparents, then his oldest uncles and aunts, and all the way to his older brother.
This will take place in the morning of the wedding day.
The Wedding Banquet will be held at Hong Kong Flower lounge in Millbrae that evening.
In Chinese tradition, the Wedding Banquet is seen as a public recognition of the union. Historically, the more lavish the display and the more food and leftovers, the more wealthy the hosts. A Chinese Wedding Banquet is typically an 8 course meal. Most of the foods commonly served were symbolic – this would include fish, roast suckling pig, pigeon, chicken cooked with red oil, lobster and desert bun with lotus seeds stuffed inside. The pronunciation of fish is the same as "abundance", meaning the newlyweds will have plentiful of wealth. Roast suckling pig is usually served whole, a symbol of the bride's purity (virginity). Pigeon implies peaceful future.
